Arsenal score 7 to knock out Millwall

Current FA Women’s Cup holders Arsenal eased passed Millwall Lionesses with a very convincing 7-0 win to send them in to the quarter finals of the competition.

Arsenal were without England legends Kelly Smith and Rachel Yankey, but gave starts to new signings Jemma Rose, Vicky Losada and Natalia Pablos Sanchon.

The Gunners also welcomed back Lianne Sanderson, who left the club in 2008, having spent 5 years in the States.

New manager Pedro Martinez Losa was looking to impress in his first taste of FA Cup football and although his side looked more confident from the outset than the Lionesses, it took 20 minutes before the deadlock was broken.

Natalia whipped in a great corner and Danielle Carter was there to nod it past Millwall keeper Frankie Gibbs, to make it 1-0 to the visitors.

From then on the floodgates opened with the Gunners hitting the post and then the crossbar twice in quick succession before Sanderson eventually got the second goal their dominance merited.

After great play out on the left-hand side by Carla Humphrey and a tantalising ball into the box, Sanderson only had to tap in from close range at the near post to net on her return.

Jordan Nobbs who had been brilliant the whole half, got her just rewards on the stroke of half time, firing in Arsenal’s third from six yards.

Millwall started the second half with a rare chance when substitute Shirvae Edwards found some space 25 yards out, but could only send her shot over the crossbar.

But Arsenal got back to scoring ways, when Carter doubled her tally, racing through from the half way line before calmly finishing into the bottom corner, to make it 4-0.

Debutant Natalia then got on the score sheet, latching on to a Carter cross to smash it past Gibbs at close range, before turning provider for Carla Humphrey who finished high into the roof of the net.

Finally Carter secured her hat trick with a close range effort on 85 minutes, sealing an emphatic victory for Arsenal and sending them into the next round.

The 13-time FA Cup winners will now go on to play Chelsea Ladies at home on Sunday 12 April.
