Kirby runs riot for Royals against Yeovil in opener

Fran Kirby scored all 4 goals for Reading in their opening match of the WSL2 season which saw them beat Yeovil Town 4-2.

It took just 6 minutes for last year’s leading goalscorer across England’s top two tiers to open her account for the 2015 season, capitalising on some confusion amongst the Yeovil defenders and slotting a cool finish past Yeovil goalkeeper Charlotte Haynes.

Reading didn’t have the lead for long however as Tash Knapman bagged her first goal for Yeovil, converting a Helen Bleazard’s cross to level the scores.

In-form Kirby then struck twice in quick succession just before half-time to put Reading back in front – the first a powerful shot that left Haynes with no chance, and then a composed finish into the bottom left-hand corner for the hatrick.

After the break league debutant Corinne Yorston had the chance to pull one back for Yeovil after Annie Heatherson was brought down by Reading keeper Grace Moloney inside the box.

Yorston made no mistake converting the penalty and set up a tantalising finish to the game with the scores precariously balanced at 3-2 with just under 15 minutes left to play.

All hope of a comeback for the visitors was extinguished in injury time when Kirby grabbed her fourth and sealed the victory for the Royals.
