Millwall Lionesses welcome Everton Ladies to the Den this weekend as the latter look for three vital points in their pursuit of promotion.
The Toffees 21-year-run in the top flight of women’s football was ended last season when they were relegated to WSL 2 with two games of the season remaining.
Andy Spence’s side have got their season off to a perfect start beating Aston Villa 2-1 in their opening league game before progressing through to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup thanks to an extra-time win against Bristol Academy of the WSL 1.
Defender Lindsay Johnson hopes her team can continue their winning streak but recognises that the Blues will face a difficult test against a young and promising Millwall side.
The 34 year-old said: “With last season being their first season, like a lot of teams, Millwall were finding their feet but all the WSL 2 teams will be more organised and know what it’s about this year.
“I’m sure it will be a tough game and we won’t take them for granted, especially as we’ve got to travel a long way down to London for it.”
Millwall finished 8th last year and after adding new faces to their squad over the closed season, manager Dan Mlinar will be hoping for an improved position come October. However his side have had a disappointing start to their campaign, drawing with London Bees in their opening fixture and losing heavily to London rivals Arsenal in the FA Cup.
The Lionesses picked up a few knocks in Sunday’s FA Cup clash but when speaking to the club’s official website, Mlinar confirmed Naomi Cole and Megan Goss would be available for selection, although Lily Agg will miss out due to a tight hamstring.
Mlinar said of Agg’s injury: “If we keep playing her she’ll be out for a long time but if she misses one game we can have her back fit for the rest of the season.
“We’re looking at having her ready to go for Durham away but she will unfortunately miss out this weekend. It’s a short term pain for a long term gain.”
The last time these two sides met back in 2009/10, the Merseyside club were comfortable 5-0 winners.
