Durham look for first consecutive win at home to Millwall

New Ferens Park provided Millwall with a comfortable 4-1 victory this time last year – with striker Lillie Fenlon-Billson grabbing a hat trick on the day – and the Lionesses will hope for more good fortune there once again as they enter the fixture against Durham without a win in their last three.

Fenlon-Billson is expected to feature again, this time alongside the on-loan Rosella Ayane, who scored on her debut last week in the draw at home to Everton.

The point against the Toffees was Millwall’s second, after their opening fixture against London Bees finished goalless.

Their opponents Durham have had a mixed start to their campaign, with last week’s impressive 3-0 win at home to Oxford United following a defeat to Doncaster Rovers Belles by the same score line.

The Wildcats have only once managed to secure back-to-back victories in the league since their entrance into the WSL last year.

Forward Jemma Purfield believes her side can overcome Sunday’s visitors and explained confidence was high after the result against Oxford.

“The Millwall game is another that we do feel we can win, but it is important we make sure to do the right things.

“We picked up a result against Oxford so now we need to carry that forward and build some momentum which is important.”

Millwall disappointed many last year, losing 10 of their final 12 league games and succumbing to an eventual 8th place finish. Speaking to the official FAWSL website, midfielder Ciara Sherwood was keen to point out the Lionesses’ development.

“From results so far you can really tell that our hard training has improved us a lot. We want to prove that our pre-season has been good. We definitely want to finish higher than we did last season. If we finish in the top half of the table that would be brilliant.”
