Everton fight back for a point against Bees

Danielle Turner scored twice in six second-half minutes to give Everton Ladies a well-earned point at home to London Bees.

Goals from Lucy Loomes and Leigh Nicol gave the Bees a two nil lead within 39 minutes, but Julian Broomes’ side were unable to replicate the same intensity in the second half.

The Bees who are unbeaten away from home, made two changes to the side that lost to Reading last week, recalling Aoife Hurley and Katherine Huggins to the defence.

Everton also made changes to their side due to international call-ups with Danielle Lea, Megan Alexander, Jess King and Danielle Young all being given a place in the starting XI.

The Bees started the game as the better team, and within two minutes could have taken the lead, but Nicol’s shot cannoned off the post.

However, it took just 26 minutes for the visitors to go in front, after Everton gave away possession too easily.

Huggins did well to find Loomes, who comfortably slotted the ball into the bottom corner past Toffees keeper Megan Walsh to make it one-nil.

The Bees then got a second following a Cheryl Williams shot which Walsh saved well, but the Everton number one couldn’t keep out Nicol’s in-swinging corner which floated straight in at the back post.

The Toffees reduced the deficit just five minutes into the second half when Turner picked up the ball from inside her own half and took on several players before poking the ball past Bees keeper Sophie Harris.

Just six minutes later Everton were back on level terms, Turner finishing in similar fashion again and grabbing her second off the game and that all important equaliser.

Having come from two goals down the Toffees had the momentum and could have won the game late on with five minutes remaining but Lindsey Johnson saw her header smash against the crossbar, and the game ended all square.

After the match Broomes admitted his side were a bit inexperienced after squandering a two goal lead.

“With a two-goal lead at half-time, you’d expect to go on and win the game,” said Broomes.

“But I feel that our team is still a little bit naive because we’re not used to being in these positions.

“We should be looking to beat teams in and around us, and if Everton and Millwall are going to be the teams that are close to us then we’ve got to make sure we beat them so we can finish in the top half.”

London Bees are still without a win from their opening three games and sit 8th in the WSL 2. Everton Ladies are now third.
