A second half flurry of goals gave Yeovil Town a much-needed first win of the season away at Oxford United on Sunday evening.
The win maintains Yeovil’s 100% record against Oxford and also sees them leapfrog their rivals into 5th place.
The second half was barely 3 minutes old when Corinne Yorston, who recently signed from Bristol Academy, opened the scoring after Ann-Marie Heatherson had watched her lob rebound off the crossbar.
Oxford boss Les Taylor lamented his team’s slow start to the half. “They switched off in that first five or ten minutes,” he said.
“Their concentration levels had to be really high, because Yeovil are a good side and if you give them half a chance it’ll end up in the back of your net”.
In fact Taylor was probably left displeased with the manner in which all three goals were conceded, as Nicola Cousins was left completely unmarked at a corner and had the easiest of headers to double the Glovers’ lead.
Yeovil made sure of the points with 15 minutes left to play, when Heatherson showed off her goal-poaching skills by touching in from close range after Oxford had failed to clear.
Oxford have only managed to find the net once so far this campaign, in a 1-0 win against Watford. The goal scorer that day was captain Sahara Osborne-Ricketts and the same player came closest to scoring for the hosts against Yeovil, rattling the post with a free kick in the first half.
Yeovil started their season with two defeats against promotion chasers Reading and Doncaster Rovers Belles, but manager Jamie Sherwood now believes his side can kick on and put together a good run of results.
“The group have played well in the previous two games but we haven’t taken a result so it was all about getting three points on the board and now start looking forward for the rest of the season.”
