Chelsea will welcome Liverpool to Wheatsheaf Park on Sunday, as Emma Hayes’ side play their first home league game of the season against the reigning champions who piped them to the title last year on the final day.
The last time these two title contenders met, the Reds took all three points in a 2-0 victory courtesy of goals from Lucy Bronze and Gemma Davison – two players who have now left the Merseyside outfit.
The closed season saw Bronze move to Manchester City and Davison join the Blues who she will now face for the first time since her departure.
Chelsea currently sit top of the WSL 1 with a maximum 6 points, while the visitors sit in fourth, following one win and one defeat – after a shock opening loss to Sunderland.
Heading into the clash following an FA Cup quarter-final win at Arsenal, Hayes currently boasts four consecutive victories in all competitions. And midfielder Katie Chapman believes her side are full of confidence heading into the fixture.
“We’re really pleased with the start we’ve made and I think we’ve overcome some things from last season,” she said.
“Our away form wasn’t great so to play at Notts County on the opening day and win there was good for us. We’ve been knocked out of cup competitions by Arsenal in the past and it was nice to go there last Sunday and get the result.”
The captain’s sentiments were echoed by former Red, Davison who spoke to Read WSL ahead of the fixture against her old club.
“Liverpool are no pushovers in the league and I learnt a lot there so I know they are a really tough team to play against. We are confident of where we are as a team but we definitely won’t underestimate them.
“You can’t put a bet on who will the WSL at the moment and that’s exciting.”
