Birmingham and Notts still hunt for first win

Both Birmingham City and Notts County are yet to record their first win of the 2015 season after they played out a goalless draw on Sunday afternoon.

Remi Allen should have ensured all three points for the home side but her penalty was saved by Notts keeper Carly Telford with ten minutes to go.

The best chance of the first half fell to the visitors after Rachel Williams was brought down on the edge of the box by Birmingham’s Kerys Harrop.

But Alex Greenwood’s resulting free-kick was comfortably saved by Rebecca Spencer.

The hosts best opportunity also came from a set-piece but Jo Potter’s effort sailed over the bar.

Ellen White then went close on two occasions, almost getting on the end of a dangerous cross from the right before shooting straight at Spencer moments later.

County were dealt a serious blow after the break when England international Greenwood had to be helped off the pitch with a knee injury.

But the hosts were unable to capitalise on their opponents new-look back four, although they went close through Coral-Jade Haines whose strike whistled narrowly over the bar after some good work from Emily Simpkins down the wing.

With ten minutes remaining the Blues had the perfect opportunity to see the game off from the penalty spot but Allen’s strike was at just the right height for Telford who saved comfortably.

After the game Birmingham manager David Parker told BBC Sport:

“The big thing today was that we lost two on the bounce and in no way could we lose three on the bounce – it is unheard of from this football club in this league in recent years.

“We had to stop the rot. We will take the point and clean sheet – it is something to build on.

“Today was about not losing – that was a big, big thing. The same really went for both teams as we both only had one point from two games to start the season.”
