Everton hope to stay in title hunt with points at Watford

This Sunday sees bottom of the table Watford take on Everton at the Broadwater Stadium in the WSL 2.

The Hornets first and only point of the season so far came in their last fixture against Millwall Lionesses which ended goalless. Their opponents this weekend also shared the spoils last time out drawing with title favourites Doncaster Rovers Belles which left the Toffees in fifth position after one win and three draws.

The Merseyside outfit have, however, had more luck in the FA Cup, progressing to the semi-finals where they will play WSL 1 side Notts County.

Defender Gabby George knows her side have not been clinical enough in the league this season and is aware improvement is needed if they are achieve promotion straight back in to the top tier.

“You just can’t underestimate any teams in the WSL 2 so we are expecting a tough test against Watford on Sunday,” said George.

“We’ve not played them before but with us dropping down from WSL1, everyone wants to beat us this year so we have to make sure we are ready. We’ve dropped points in recent weeks and we can’t afford to drop any more so it’s a must-win game.”

Last weekend’s point and clean sheet against Millwall will have provided Watford with something to build on ahead of this Sunday’s game. And Grace Gillard explained the result may have been due to a new defensive system.

“I didn’t play in the first league game of the season, after that we brought in a new formation which gave me a chance to get in the squad,” said Gillard.

“We’ve been working on it in training for a couple of weeks now so hopefully that will all come together and help us this weekend. We’re at the bottom of the table at the moment and we don’t want to be there, so keeping the momentum from our first point and then getting another or gaining three would be ideal.

“If we’re hard to beat then it makes it easier for us, we didn’t concede last time out and we can’t lose if we don’t concede, which is really important.”

Fortunes may also be improving for Watford at the other end of the pitch, as the club announced on Friday that they have signed 19 year old striker Ellie Mason from Chelsea on a permanent deal, and she would be eligible to make her debut against Everton this weekend.
