Everton travel to Reading in title contender clash

Reading host fellow title-hopefuls Everton in the WSL 2 on Saturday, having managed just one point from their last two games.

The Royals trail leaders Doncaster by three points, despite being the league’s top scorers, notching 18 goals already in just 5 games. 11 of these have been scored by England international Fran Kirby, who will no doubt be keen to continue impressing in the run-up to the national team’s World Cup squad announcement.

Everton are unbeaten in the league and lie fourth in the table after triumphing 3-1 at Watford last time out. However, since that fixture the Toffees have competed in the semi-final of the FA Women’s Cup, losing 3-0 to Notts County.

The Merseysiders will be looking to put that disappointment behind them this weekend as they push on with their attempts to gain promotion straight back to the top tier. And captain Michelle Hinnigan sees no reason why their league form shouldn’t continue:

“It’s massively important we keep this run of wins going in the league because last season we didn’t win in WSL 1,” said the midfielder.

“Although we stayed confident, it definitely affects the way you approach games so to have already got that win under our belt is important. We’re growing in confidence from our performances so far this season and hopefully that can continue.

“We have lost quite a few players but the spine of the team is still here with players like me, Lindsay Johnson and Vicky and Kelly Jones. So now that the new signings have started to settle in we’re really starting to gel.

“The performance against Watford was brilliant because we had three different goal scorers so that shows we can score from anywhere on the pitch.”
