WSL hopefuls Coventry deducted points

Coventry City have been deducted 6 points after including both Emma Hollingsworth and Carly Davies in fixtures against Huddersfield and Nottingham Forest. Both are registered WSL players. The WPL rules state a team can only field 1 WSL player at a time.

The penalty means the Sky Blues can no longer be promoted to the Women’s Super League as Sheffield FC will now win the Northern Division and book a place in the promotion play-off with Southern Division champions Portsmouth.

Portsmouth secured the league title with a 3-1 win over West Ham United last weekend. The play-off will be played on 24th May and the winner will earn a place in WSL 2.

The Women’s Premier League will now try and get permission from the FA to grant Coventry the right to appeal the decision before the play-off.

Coventry City released a statement on their club website that read: “The Club is extremely disappointed with this decision, particularly as we have never intentionally or knowingly broken any rules.”

“We will be taking this matter under advisement and therefore have no further comment to make at this time while we consider our options.”
