Bees hope to move off bottom with win at Oxford

With no WSL 1 action this weekend, all eyes turn to the WSL 2 where Oxford United host London Bees on Sunday afternoon.

The corresponding fixture last season took place on the opening day, with the Bees emerging victorious after stinging their hosts 3-0. The points were shared in the return fixture when the teams drew one-a-piece.

United will go into this game buoyed from their three points and clean sheet against Durham last time out, where a solitary first-half goal from Kat Nutman was enough to see off the Wildcats.

In contrast, London Bees suffered their third defeat in a row last weekend as they found themselves on the receiving end of a 5-1 drubbing by league leaders Doncaster Rovers Belles. And as a result of Watford’s win against Aston Villa, the Bees have now replaced the Hornets at the foot of the table.

Julian Broomes’ Bees – who are without a win all season – are the joint lowest scorers in the league, and have the worst defence, having already conceded 22 goals.

Despite a rather difficult start to the season, Oxford are now unbeaten in their last two games and manager Les Taylor is pleased with his team’s progression.

“We have been far more consistent this time around than at this stage last season. It took us a little while to find our feet last summer, but I think we look as though that year’s extra experience has really helped. We have carried on the form we showed at the end of last year and I have been delighted with the attitude the players have shown and the way we have played.”

Taylor went on to acknowledge that even though Sunday’s visitors are struggling, his side mustn’t be complacent:

“London Bees won’t be happy with the way they have started the season, but that makes them a very dangerous side and our attitude will need to be spot on if we want another win.”
