Doncaster Rovers Belles continued to heap the pressure on Reading at the top of the WSL 2 table, with goals from Leandra Little, Courtney Sweetman-Kirk and Sue Smith securing a comfortable 3-0 victory away to Yeovil Town Ladies.
In their final game before the mid-season break, the Belles ensured the Royals could only sit top of the table on goal difference – with Glen Harris’ side kicking-off knowing the Royals had secured an impressive 5-0 victory earlier in the day.
As a result, the visitors ensured they were at their best, with Little opening the scoring after half an hour.
Having scored two headers in this fixture last season, the ? rose highest again to nod home a Sweetman-Kirk cross after the midfielder had worked tirelessly to keep the ball in when it appeared to be going behind for a corner.
The home side’s attacking threat was closed down early on, although Ellie Curson was getting some joy down the wing and delivered an excellent cross in to the box but neither Paige Stewart nor Helen Bleazard could finish as Nicola Hobbs saved well.
Sweetman-Kirk was then unlucky to not add a second before the break, with her one-on-one effort surprisingly tapped wide. Nonetheless, she persevered and secured her name on the scoresheet, knocking home Rhiannon Roberts’ free kick for her seventh goal of the season.
The rout was then completed by Smith from the penalty spot after she was fouled in the box in the closing stages of the match.
The result, described by Belles boss Harris as the “perfect away performance”, left third placed Yeovil doubting their title credentials as they sit 6 points behind the league leading two.
