Aston Villa Ladies have announced the return of central midfielder Abbeyleigh Stringer to their side after successfully signing her from Birmingham City Ladies.
Stringer initially joined the Blues back in July, but has gone on to make just two appearances in the FA WSL’s top tier. As a result, the 20-year-old had headed back to familiar surroundings in a push for regular game-time.
Her former side, Birmingham, are currently struggling in a relegation battle, but Stringer will now turn her attention to an ascent to the top, with the Villains trailing league leaders Reading by nine points after as many games.
Head coach Joe Hunt commented on his team’s latest arrival, saying: “We are delighted to welcome Abbeyleigh back. It’s another positive signing for the club. It’s a player that knows everyone at the club so will find it easy to settle in.
“She has spent a year with Birmingham City playing with great players like Karen Carney and Jade Moore and the experience she has had playing with full senior England internationals will make her a stronger player.”
Stringer now returns to Villa to line up along another impressive set of players. Sarah Mayling and Kerri Welsh have been noted for their attacking work in midfield, while Alicia Robinson provides a more defensive option.
“Abbey’s signing will take the pressure off Alicia in the middle of the pitch, she’ll have someone who can assist her with the ball retention in the right areas,” Hunt added.
“She’s always had the ability to pick a pass but is also a good finisher.
“On top of this she finds it easy to go box-to-box, her fitness levels were always high and now she has spent a season with a WSL 1 team I expect them to be higher.”
Stringer will now have four weeks to train with her new side in preparation for a return against Millwall on July 12.
