Man City sign American youngster Daphne Corboz

Manchester City have made their first mid-season signing, bringing in American youngster Daphne Corboz from Georgetown University. In January, Sky Blue FC selected Corboz in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) draft.

Corboz is the latest addition to the Manchester City squad, which has continued to grow since it’s rebranding in 2014. The youngster has said she was attracted by the impressive set up at MCWFC.

“Seeing all the facilities here during my first visit really blew me away. I feel like there’s no better place to play football”. She added, “Football is my passion. I’m really excited to be here.”

Manchester City have made a disappointing start to the league campaign, they lie 6th in WSL1 with just 5 points from 5 games. City are 9 points behind leaders Chelsea, with a game in hand.

Corboz, 22, has turned down a place at medical school in order to move to Manchester. But the American believes that the move is the right decision for her progression as a footballer.

“Holding off medical school was hard but the prospect of playing here lured me away from that for the time being,” she told the club’s website. “It was really difficult to make the decision to come all the way to England but for my development, I thought it was the best option.”

Corboz recently featured for her national side at under-23 level at the Four Nations tournament. Fellow Americans Libby Stout and Santara Murray both play for Liverpool Ladies. Corboz believes that the recent success of England at the Women’s World Cup will attract more Americans to come and play in the WSL.

“I think more American players will start to come to England now and the league will definitely grow,” Corboz said. “The success England Women had in the World Cup can only be beneficial for the league here.”

Corboz will join up with the likes of Jill Scott, Toni Duggan and Karen Bardsley as the City squad prepare for the second half of the season. Manchester City host Birmingham City on Sunday July 12 at the Academy Stadium.
