Manchester City take on Birmingham City on Sunday at the Academy Stadium where 8 of England’s World Cup heroines will be on show.
City and England captain Steph Houghton will line up alongside team mates Jill Scott, Toni Duggan and World Cup Player of the Tournament nominee Lucy Bronze, who will be hoping to continue her excellent form from the international stage into the WSL and score her first goal for Manchester City.
Opposing them will be Birmingham City’s Lioness trio of Jo Potter, Jade Moore and Karen Carney who, like Bronze, also scored two goals in the tournament.
However, in the domestic game both teams have struggled in the first half of the season. Birmingham are yet to win a match and only scored once in the opening six games, while City only have one victory under their belts leaving them sixth and seventh respectively.
Nick Cushing’s City side only scored three goals in the WSL 1 before the break so have brought in reinforcements in the recent transfer window in the form of Daphne Corboz from Georgetown University in America.
This is the only new addition for City but the attacking midfielder is keen to make her mark on the English game, telling the official FA WSL website: “I think more American players will start to come to England now and the league will definitely grow.
“The success England Women had in the World Cup can only be beneficial for the league here.”
City manager Cushing has the following to say about his newest recruit: “We’d seen her in a few of her college games and she had a really good record so she’ll really improve the team in attacking areas.
“She’s also a very fit footballer and she’ll be able to play box-to-box which is something this team needs.”
This will be the third time these two teams will play each other this year after a 0-0 draw in the league and a 3-1 victory in the FA Cup for the Manchester outfit.
With ticket sales on the up according to the FA, Sunday’s game looks to be one you don’t want to miss.
