Villa move up to fourth as Oxford also climb the table

Aston Villa Ladies 2-1 Millwall Lionesses

Villa forward Katie Wilkinson looked to be unaffected by the mid-season break, picking up from where she left off, scoring one and setting up the other as her side beat Millwall Lionesses 2-1.

Wilkinson broke the deadlock halfway through the first 45 when Millwall defender Naomi Cole mishit her clearance following a Laura Cooper cross.

The visitors then had a chance to level the game before the break but Lillie Billson fired her effort over the bar before forcing a fine save from Villa goalkeeper Jess Myers shortly after the restart.

Myers was then beaten by Ciara Sherwood’s lob, but unfortunately for the Lionesses her strike came back off the bar, before Villa also hit the woodwork down the other end.

As the London side looked to get back in to the game Wilkinson turned on the magic, setting up Bethan Merrick who had an easy tap-in following a brilliant cross.

Millwall did however manage to pull a late goal back in injury time through substitute Lilli Maple but it wasn’t enough and they left empty handed as the Lady Villains climbed up to fourth.

London Bees 1-2 Oxford United Women

Oxford left it late to secure all three points away at league strugglers London Bees who were seeking just their second victory of the campaign.

Andria Georgiou opened the scoring from the penalty spot for the Bees after debutant Emma Whittler was brought down by Isi Meade, but it wasn’t enough to prevent defeat for her side as straight after the half-time break Oxford levelled when Kayleigh Hines powered her header past a helpless Sophie Harris.

The visitors then pushed on for the victory and could have gone ahead numerous times as the Bees defence struggled to soak up the pressure. Just as they looked to have done enough, the second goal came in injury time at the end of the game after the Bees gave away possession, allowing Laura Low to run through and bag the winning goal for Les Taylor’s team.
