Bristol record first league win with surprise victory at County
Bottom of the table Bristol Academy recorded their first league victory of the season in a surprise result away to Notts County yesterday evening.
Jade Boho Sayo scored the only goal of the game after 21 minutes to give the Vixens their third consecutive win in all competitions.
The home side started the brightest and Ellen White went close with a header from Alex Greenwood’s corner in the opening exchanges, before Jess Clarke set up Dunia Susi with an inviting cross which just needed a touch.
A slice of fortune for Bristol led to the opening goal just minutes later when a deflected shot fell kindly to Jade who headed past Carly Telford to grab the Vixen’s 7th WSL goal of 2015.
County asserted their dominance further in the second half and thought they had found the equaliser when Aileen Whelan had the ball in the back of the net, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
10 minutes later Susi missed a glaring opportunity, heading against the post from a few yards out before Jade nearly doubled the visitor’s advantage with a 40 yard screamer that flicked off the crossbar.
Despite the stats, County couldn’t find that precious leveller although they went agonisingly close in the dying seconds but England international Laura Bassett fired her effort over from six yards.
The defeat leaves the FA Cup runners-up four points off the league leaders Sunderland in fourth with all three teams ahead of them with a game in hand.
Striker Clarke spoke to the official FA WSL website after the game.
“We’re disappointed with the game but we are all experienced players and we’ve got that bounce-back-ability,” she said.
“Credit to Bristol, they played some good football and they managed to get a goal early on that didn’t help but at the same time I think we’ve got the players that can put the ball into the back of the net.
“We played some good football, it was just the final third that let us down. We had the chances and vitally you need to score to win the game and it just wasn’t happening.”
