Liverpool Ladies captain Gemma Bonner insists they aren’t worried about their position in the FA WSL 1, despite sitting third from bottom and only five points ahead of bottom side Bristol Academy who the Reds face on Saturday.
Last season Liverpool won the FA WSL 1 title on the final day; becoming the first club to ever successfully defend the FA WSL title.
“I wouldn’t say we’re panicking, we’re winners in this team,” Bonner told BBC Sport.
“It’s quite tight both at the top and the bottom and there’s not much between the teams.
“It’s probably unusual for most of us being in this position and you’ve got to get through these phases, but there’s still games to play.
“There’s still lots of points to play for so we are looking to finish as high up as we can.”
The Reds have only won three games out of a possible nine so far this season and will start their Champions League campaign in October against Italian side Brescia.
Bonner and the rest of her teammates haven’t won a league game in over a month, but she insists that their 100% record in the Continental Cup has given them confidence.
Chelsea are 10 points ahead of the reigning champions but Bonner believes Liverpool can have a say in who wins the league:
“We’re taking each game and we’re going to look to win as many as possible,” added the skipper.
“We’re definitely not giving up the title fight easy, but a lot of teams are ahead of us now so we’re looking to finish as high up the table as we can. But we’ve got to concentrate on picking up the points first.”
Matt Beard has had to cope with an injury-hit team with Women’s World Cup stars Fara Williams and Asisat Oshoala joining Satara Murray on the treatment table.
