Carli Lloyd open to playing in England

American midfielder Carli Lloyd says she would consider playing in the Women’s Super League in England.

The 33-year-old became the first woman to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final when she captained the United States to a 5-2 win over Japan this summer. Lloyd scored all three goals in just 13 minutes.

The USA star has been capped over 200 times at international level scoring 70 goals and is currently playing for Houston Dash in the US National Women’s Soccer but has said she would consider a move to England.

Speaking to BBC Sport , Lloyd said: “I think that league is growing a lot,”

“It’s the next up-and-coming league. It’s doing well and it’s cool that it’s a part of the Champions League.

“I wouldn’t be opposed to it.”

There has only been one United States international that has moved to the WSL; Whitney Egen joined Liverpool Ladies in 2013.

If any move was to happen Lloyd would ensure that it wouldn’t affect her international availability.

“This next year is Olympic preparation and obviously very busy, but there are a couple of down years that we have,” she added.

“It makes it extremely hard for our national team coaches to be able to bring us in and out of camps if we’re overseas playing for another team, so it’s something to maybe touch base with in those off years.”
