WSL 2016 Player Profile: Fara Williams

Having won 148 caps for England Fara Williams will already go down in history as an England legend.   Naturally, for the already two time WSL winner, her move from Liverpool to Arsenal in January was been met with both huge anticipation and expectation throughout the WSL.

Williams was a key player for England during their 2015 World Cup campaign and her arrival at Arsenal is expected to improve the creativity in the side massively. Not only will she bring added quality to an already strong team, Williams is a great character in the dressing room, and will bring experience of winning the 2013 and 2014 WSL titles to Borehamwood.

Williams started her career at Chelsea Ladies, scoring an incredible 30 goals from midfield in the 2000/01 campaign, before joining Charlton Athletic, a club she was with for three years. It was there she won the FA Women’s Young Player of the Year award, before being voted the FA Players Player of the Year in 2008/09 after joining Everton in 2004. During her spell at Everton she also won the FA Women’s Cup, after losing previous finals with Charlton Athletic.

The talented midfielder then moved to Everton’s rivals, Liverpool, four years ago. It was there that Williams began to gain more wide-scale attention and recognition for her performances as the popularity of women’s football increased with the inception of the WSL, a title she’s won twice.

Her performances of late, especially for England have seen her become one of the best midfielders they have ever had, and she’ll now be keen to show what she can do back in London after spells in Merseyside.

Williams as always is a player to watch this season, and she could quickly become Arsenal’s key player. She will add definite quality to the Gunners side, and the goals and assists she brings to a team could prove to be very important come the end of the 2016 season.
