Leah Cathrine Williamson extended her contract for Arsenal Women: Central Back signed 2 years

Share

Leah Williamson has just signed a new contract with Arsenal Women. Arsenal officially announced it on Thursday (April 30, 2026), confirming that the England captain and long-time Gunner is staying at the club for two more years.

With the new two-year contract signed in April 2026, Williamson (now 29) is committed to Arsenal until at least 2027/28. This extends her long association with the club she joined as a child and reinforces her status as one of the most loyal and iconic figures in the women’s game.

Early Life and Roots

Leah Cathrine Williamson was born on 29 March 1997 in Milton Keynes, England. She grew up in a football-loving family, her mum played the game and was encouraged from a young age. Her football journey started at age six when her gymnastics coach suggested the group kick a ball around at the end of sessions. She joined Scots Youth FC in Bletchley (a boys’ team, where she was the only girl) for about a year.

As a child, she was a passionate Arsenal supporter. A pivotal early moment came in 2006/07 when, at around age nine or ten, she served as a mascot for Arsenal Women during their UEFA Women’s Cup final win at Meadow Park. That experience left a lasting impression.

Joining Arsenal Academy

In 2006, at age nine, Williamson joined Arsenal’s Centre of Excellence (academy). She progressed through all the youth age groups at the club she grew up supporting. She has described fond memories like receiving her first Arsenal kit (number six) in a black bin bag, with her whole family watching her try it on, and even her uncle “stealing” Arsenal-branded coat hangers from presentation evenings.

She started out primarily as a central midfielder but later transitioned into a centre-back role (with versatility to play in midfield or other defensive spots). Her composure on the ball, passing range, and leadership stood out early. Her story is a classic “one-club player” tale in modern football, from academy mascot and local grassroots to captaining her country to multiple trophies while staying loyal to her boyhood (girlhood) club.

Senior Debut and Club Career at Arsenal

  • Debut: She made her senior debut for Arsenal in 2014 at age 17 (the day after turning 17), coming on as a substitute for Rachel Yankey in a Women’s Champions League match against Birmingham City.26
  • She has spent her entire senior career at Arsenal over 20 years at the club when counting her academy time. By around 2025/26, she had racked up more than 230 appearances and 15 goals.

Major honours with Arsenal include:

  • Women’s Super League (WSL) title
  • Multiple FA Cups (at least two)
  • League Cups (four or more)
  • UEFA Women’s Champions League

Major achievements as captain:

  • Led England to victory at UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 on home soil (beating Germany 2-1 in the final at Wembley) — the first major trophy for the senior women’s team.
  • Captained England in the 2023 Women’s Finalissima win against Brazil.
  • After missing the 2023 World Cup due to injury, she returned and captained England to defend their title at UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 in Switzerland, winning on penalties against Spain, making her the first England captain (male or female) to lift two major trophies.

Playing Style and Injury Challenges

Williamson is known as a composed, ball-playing defender who reads the game well and can dictate play from the back. Her leadership qualities made her a natural captain. Off the pitch, she’s articulate, has done work with brands like Nike, and is seen as an inspiring figure for young girls in football.

Her career has included setbacks, most notably a serious ACL injury to her right knee in 2023 (during a WSL match), which ruled her out for about 10 months and caused her to miss the 2023 World Cup. She made a strong comeback and has dealt with subsequent knee management, calf, and hamstring issues, but has continued to perform at a high level when fit.

In her recent interview, Leah Cathrine Williamson said “I don’t feel like I’m done. I think it’s really special to be somewhere where you care so much about the people, the project, the place. I don’t think it’s something to take for granted. After 20 years, I still feel wanted and I want to be here, so I don’t understand why it would have been time to leave this time”.
